Measure LSo Measure L is too move our general election (June) to September our primary election. And here is my Ballot thing Info.
Measure L We should vote in fall Let's have more votes to include True democracy. The citizens of San Diego are allowed to come up with their own ballot measures. All it takes is a petition that goes through the city clerk. To pass a petition, you must pass the threshold of 100,000 signatures in 30 days, and then these are listed on the ballot as “Initiatives” and “referendums.” Currently, we vote on these on the closest date from which they approved, either in the primaries (June) or in the general election (November). Measure L will change the way our city votes on initiatives and referenda. Instead of voting in either June or November, voters will only vote on the November date. The reason behind this is that there is more voter turnout in the general election. The voice of the San Diego’s democracy would more present and would better determine the people’s say.
A Yes VoteThe Democratic party drafted up this initiative in order to level out the voting field because young voters aren't being represented in the June primaries.
It’s better to have the vote in November because the more voters we get, the more voices we have making decisions for the city. The reason behind this is that there is more voter turnout in the general election. This will change this measure to benefit local Democratic causes in San Diego city. There is also more time for people to think about their decisions, make better decisions, or rethink their decisions based on when the proposition is announced. The proposition also states that the city board can vote on putting a future petition initiative on the primary (June) if they see fit. This acts as a loophole for important petitions that need to be accelerated. “Measures K&L eliminate the confusion, allowing a larger and more informed public to weigh in on issues important for all of us.” --Chuck Abdelnour (Retired San Diego City Clerk and Chief Elections Officer) SUPPORTERS: Sherri Lightner(President, San Diego City Council), Todd Gloria(San Diego City Councilman), Alan Arrollado(President, San Diego Firefighters), Chuck Abdelnour(Retired San Diego City Clerk and Chief Elections Officer) A No VoteIf you vote no, you are voting to keep the ballot process the same. Non-supporters claim that if people start voting in November, there will be too many measures.
The State of California propositions are also voted on in November. There are already 35 San Diego measures on the general election ballot in contrast to only nine on the primary’s, so if more measures were placed on the November ballot, the voter would have even more overwhelming decisions to make. Another reason for voting no is that it would take longer to pass a measure because the voters would have to wait for November. Another reason to vote no could be because it makes it harder to pass petition-based measures. This measure only affects petition-based initiatives, so the city would still be able to draft up their own measures while the petition initiatives have to wait until November. This is bad because it puts restrictions on the public's measures but not the city councils. “How is it fair to tie the hands of the public this way when city officials don’t face similar restrictions? Moreover, ballot measures are often presented to voters to overturn a council action, in a check on municipal government power. This change would weaken the public’s position.” --Union Tribune Editorial Board
OPPOSERS: According to city records, there is no official opposition to K or L despite stated opposition by the Republican Party and the largely developer- funded Lincoln Club. Supporters include the Democratic Party, San Diego Firefighters, Councilmember Todd Gloria and Council President Sherri Lightner. Union Tribune Editorial Board |
